Hi all
With the ongoing and continued closure of the Eyre Highway from Norseman to Caiguna I am looking at a plan B route.
I need to be in Brisbane on the 12th Jan for work and plan to ride the GSA across.
As anyone rode the Great Central Road recently who can give me some idea of the conditions out there.
I have touring tyres on the bike now gut may get some Knobs on it if it is the only option to get across to the East.
Much appreciated
Mike

Re: GCR conditions ???
Mike, Although the GCR is an option and doable, May I say that it would be a very dangerous to attempt it at this time of the year due to extreme heat being experienced through that area and all the way to Alice Springs

Of rugged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons, I love her jeweled sea.
Her beauty and her terror, the wide brown land for me."

Yeah I would generally agree with that, It is certainly my least favoured option.
The Eyre Highway situation is looking grim but if they get a run of cooler days it might change.
I might have to fly across

Re: GCR conditions ???
I went thru at the end of September, I was lucky it was reasonably cool.
The NT side was the worst with deep sand built up either side of the tire ruts, 60 kph tops and pure concentration on the road 50 meters ahead, not a time for daydream sightseeing.
WA side a lot better the loose stuff is gravel and sand and quiet easy to transfer between wheel ruts to get a better rut.
Summer time travel have plenty of water and a evaporative cool vest. when refueling also recharge vest with water.
Fuel roughly 400 kms apart open hours 9am to 5pm Telstra reception only at the fuel stops.
Road really rough for the 75kms from Laverton then gets better watch out for the detour, left turn coming from Laverton. The detour road runs besides the destroyed old road a good while before the left turn and no signage.
WA side easy 90 100 kph watch out for camels on the road.
But still ill advised to travel that way in the summer.

Re: GCR conditions ???
Who would have thought, given the current weather conditions in our vast beautiful country.
At this time, the Great Central Road is closed due to flooding

Re: GCR conditions ???
Caution there Boz,
The Main Roads Travel map is still indicating that the GCR is closed due to flooding.
The tropical cyclone activity is passing through central WA.

As you know, it doesn't have to be raining locally for floods to occur... in a very big hurry
