Re: Camp Cook-off 2011: 17 September
Can someone explain exactly what this camp cook-off is for relatively new members?
Re: Camp Cook-off 2011: 17 September
You ride your bike to a predetermined destination to camp overnight and cook an evening meal for the judges.
You need to bring all your cooking equipment on the bike along with your ingredients which can not be prepared before hand. All preperation and cooking must be done at the campsite.
The use of manufactured ingredients is discouraged and will not score well with the judges.
Prizes are given for a range of dishes.
Prize supporters have been very generous in previous years so we hope to continue in that theme.
Its about learning and sharing about how you camp cook while you are traveling on the motorbike.
Rules of the game:
- all food and cooking equipment must come in on bike
- all preparation to be done at the camp i.e. no pre-mixing/marinating/etc beforehand
- cook enough for yourself plus a tasting plate for the judges
- extra points for matching your meal with the right beverage!

1000km ride last weekend looking at spots for the cooks to burn their pots safely at.
still looking for that spot that will provide the cooks the inspiration to move the pots from the kitchen to the camp fire.

Re: Camp Cook-off 2011: 17 September
Well after 2500km of exploring, through freezing temperatures, pouring rain, fog, muddy roads, looking at spots after numerous suggestions from club members on the likley spot to hold the 2011 Camp Cook Off, the location has been selected.
We have decide for the 3rd Camp Cook Off to use a location that has some facilities and is near water, is reasonably close to Perth and has sealed and dirt road access to allow members to choose the roads they would like to travel on.
The location is given in the track and trails map book at the southern end of a lake, however this location is incorrect and the location is actually on the Northern end of the lake so be careful when looking it up.
It is well signed posted so it can be found easily.
The GPS location is 31° 8'15.71"S 116°52'35.09"E It is located near the Tee Junction of Botherling East Road and Oak Park Road in the shire of Goomalling
The Location is Oak Park Reserve, at Walyormouring Lake, it has a small shelter, toilets, benches and fire rings and has a pool of water near the location.
Please feel free to join in even if you dont want to cook in the Camp Cook Off.
Best you get the recipe book out and start practising.
Munich Motorcycles have also generously provided a prize again this year

The pool of water at the camp spot will be salty so you need to make sure you bring enough drinking water with you.
Do we have any starters for the judging panel, anyone want to get a degustation menu for the evening!!!!!

Re: Camp Cook-off 2011: 17 September
For those looking for other things to do on the Camp Cook Off weekend a trip up to the top of Mt O'Brian is spectacular, it is locted North West of Wongan Hills on the Wongan Hills Piawaning Road about 10kms to the turn off from Wongan Hills. However use extreme caution as it is a very steep gravel road with a loose surface which will make it a challenging ascent and descent.
There is a coin operated BBQ at the top and tables and chairs
For the Bush Walkers just over the road is the Mount Matilda walk trail of 7.5 KMS with a short option as well.

Re: Camp Cook-off 2011: 17 September
A friend from Wongan Hills sent me a very good booklet on the Central Midlands tourist drives called "Central Midlands, Venture into new horizons"
It has some good routes to follow or combine segments from different ones to get to the camp cook off.
You can get it from any of the shires of Chittering, Victoria Plains, Wongan Ballidu, Moora or Dalwallinu or other tourist centres.
I smelt a few burning pots in the Malaga area last week so I hope the cooks have got the recipes sorted for the 17 September.
Paddy Pallin (Hugo) and Main Peak(Aaron @ Osborne Park) have generously offered prizes for this years camp cook off.
If you need good qulaity light weight camping and cooking equipment please support the business that support our club activites.
Also Munich Motorcycles have also chosen to support the camp cook off again.
