Golfields Ride - a repeat?

Post by _Wilks »

The Olympics come around every 4 years, so why not certain bike rides. Anyone wanna repeat the great ride from 2008 which Ben P organised?

I was thinking maybe the week starting Sun 11 November.
(changed since my first post)

The 2008 ride was a 6-day loop that went like this:
Day 1 > Paynes Find via Perenjori
Day 2 > Agnew via Sandstone
Day 3 > Niagra Dam via Leonora & Kookynie
Day 4 > Ora Banda via Lake Ballard
Day 5 > Karalee Rock via Broad Arrow & Kalgoorlie
Day 6 > home

Perhaps the 2012 version should be tweaked a bit. Maybe:
Day 1 > Paynes Find (bush camp) via Mouroubra Rd
Day 2 > Agnew Pub (camp at back of pub or across the road) via Sandstone
Day 3 > Ora Banda (bush camp) via Leonora & Lake Ballard
Day 4 > free choice... some can head straight home via Coolgardie & GEH; others may choose one more night out via Victoria Rocks Rd & Hyden

All dirt roads are well formed 'main' ones but like any ride in the Goldfields, weather can play a big part in changing things, just like it did in 2008.

JonO & Wightman... you interested? I'll work on Dren. Richard H... are you out there reading this and is the frankenbike mobile?

Any new takers?

I'll put some 2008 pics up tonight... just to whet your appetites.

We are a month off from our proposed departure on our Goldfields odyssey. Time to stir the pot again. Shane, will you be making this Tuesday's meeting at the Bowls Club?

Sorry for no reply JohnW - I've just got back from Landor Races. You lot (I mean the off-roader lot) should get yourselves up there next year. The Meeka-Landor Road was a dirt highway this year... very R1200GS friendly. And you can visit Mt Augustus 80km further north. But I digress...

11 November for the Goldfileds ride is no good for me now. My employer has just 'volunteered' me to run a 2-day conference on 15 & 16 November. I couldn't wriggle out of it.

Have a wedding anniversary to attend on 21 Nov... mine

Anyone care to nominate other dates for this 3 or 4 day ride?

Thu 22 Nov to Sun 25 Nov looks good.

Temps might be getting a bit high for the northern Goldfields late Nov or early Dec but don't be deterred. If we are looking at 35+ forecasts, I'll have a plan B ride in reserve - something not so far north.

So, who's a starter???

I'm going to put it in my diary, in pencil for 25th. Another old campaigner, Keith Jelley, an outback veteran, is also keen. Then there's Koos and Jamie, the club's rising stars, it shouldn't take a lot to get those gentlemen roped in. And then our sniper from the east, who's more bark than bite. What about it McF?

Only one 'pencil' and one 'interested'. Thanks John and Bill.

I know its a busy time of the year for many and time off is hard to get.

Probably best to cancel then. See if there's more interest in 6 months time.
