Sport Aircraft Builders Club Run to Serpentine

Post by Bozo »

A very eventful day.

Only a few minutes into the ride we lost Bill and Tom with Bill turning back to look for Tom.

After waiting for them to catch up Bozo, Jos and Al headed along Canning Road to Araluen through event ahead/road closed signs. Expecting 2,000 cyclists like a previous ride the group proceeded carefully only to find nothing.

Richard, the weather forecaster, stated that there was only 1% chance of rain. Somehow we got rain for ten minutes every ten minutes.

After Canning Dam we headed down the Bedfordale Hill and on to Nettleton Road then back to the Highway. At Serpentine we passed a dozen Ferraris carefully displayed at the Stockmen's Rest Café.

On to the airstrip where as we arrived a couple of Tiger Moths were taking off. After travelling past the multiple hangars on taxiways we arrived at a vintage motor cycle display to be distracted by a 1000 horsepower Rolls Royce Merlin engine being fired up.

There was a magnificent display of aircraft ranging from a WW 1 Sopworth Pup to a WW 11 Winjeel. There was even a Bucker Jungman with a swastika on its tail.

A whole cloud of half scale traction engines happily puffed around one repositioning an aircraft.

We ran into our Club Secretary, John, who had ridden his Australia Flag BMW to the event.

After the Fly In we went via Kingsbury Drive to Millbrook for a coffee then headed home down Nettleton Road.

A Dutch heavy lift expert and a Columbian helicopter mechanic made for very interesting conversations.

We should make this ride an annual event.

Apologies to Bill for ruining his birthday motor bike ride.
