ABS

Post by Hugh.Jars »

I have a late 07 gs 1200 ...anyway the abs light kept coming on and finally staying on.

The price of a new unit is around $3500 ............ Sooo I thought nothing to lose here if I just pull it apart and have a nose around.

The late model 07 has a small abs unit nothing really technical like the previous models.
I had read on the net where the general concensus was the pump brushes stick therefore the pump doesn't work hence the light on the dash.
As a non repairable part I took the pump off very easily , getting it back on is another story, the motor is a small permenant magnet dc motor.
two clips and pull the armature and brushes come out together a quick spray of electrical cleaner check the bearings , the drive shaft is an off set which sits in a roller bearing which as it turns pushes two rods back and forth.
reasembled tapped down the motor retainers and reinstalled .. woohoo no dash light abs all good.
For a non repairable part I think if BMW had fitted 4 screws to hold the motor down a LOT of grief could have been averted. The small problem of sticky brushes can be fixed in a couple of hours. All of this can be done with the tools you have at home.

No I do not fix other peoples bikes.
Now if only my ute's dash light were that easy to fix

Hi
I have just bought a 08 1200 gsa and have the abs light on.
It sometimes goes off and start up is normal , flashes until moving etc.
But when I use brakes the light stays on, is this what happened to you?
My confidence in pulling bike apart is low, do you recommend anyone?
I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks, mix.

HI Mix
Yep certainly sounds like the common fault. You would have to expect to replace the unit and pay the price of a new unit.
Then you are free to wreak whatever on fixing what you have, without the fear of stuffing it up.
Nothing to lose. Plenty to learn in the process.
Munich motorcycles in Myaree can help.
Vince in Belmont / Welshpool his ad is in the newsletter can help.
Bmw autoclassic can help
You could go to Bully's tuning day and ask him nicely (don't believe what everyone says about him , he's not a bad bloke) if he can check you sensors for the ABS (one could be sus ) with his 911 meter. I did that first to make sure it wasn't those.
If you can undo/do up bolts , bleed a brake system, tap aluminium tags with screwdriver and pliars then you could have a win.

Adventure riders go to places BECAUSE they DON'T know what the ride or their destination is like.

p.s. my ABS .. still working fine was worth the shot

I wouldn't ask Swampy as he would probably only fix your parking light and wash your bike.

cheers Phil

Hi again,
Thanks for reply and I really appreciate your help as I am over my head a bit here.
I dropped off bike at Better Motorcycle Repairs and they used their 911 which
produced error codes 29048 and 29049. Apparently unit is toast. Seemed like the only option (or the easiest ) was to replace with new.
Problem I have is I am not sure what the codes tell me exactly like u say could be sensors etc.
Does anyone know what it means? or can point me in right direction.
Any feedback on the BMW dealer are they helpful or do they just want to sell new bikes?

Swamp, do you remember a few months ago, Bry was passing out those tiny LED park light globes for the GS?, Well, I finally got around to changing it the other night. Took about 1 minute. Easy. Then again, I didn't have to stand on a milk crate.. 8)

Maybe it's because you haven't many parts left on the front of your bike since your "Mishap" Davey  ..........Would make it easier to access your headlight I guess :?:

It's either that.................................. or it's because you have "Dainty little Pansy Fingers mate

Hi again
Vince over in welshpool area would know the error codes as he is a repairer of bmws.
auto classic definitely would know, go have a chat to either see what they say dosen't hurt to ask.
Your bike works ok with independent braking so not a huge rush, see what the pricing is. You'll prolly need to lay down for awhile.

Ps swampy I finally fixed the dash light in the ute, was an oring on the MAF sensor letting air past and gave incorrect readings
no dash light now, only took slackarse me two years to get round to fixing it ... everyone said it looked expensive.
Beamer is almost back together just needs some more sticky tape here an black texta there will b riding the DR for a bit longer yet.

cheers Phil

I guess you must have done some serious damage to your bike Phil  I guess the main thing is that you and Kim came out of it okay Ouch!!

I suppose it would be fair to say that it wasn't insured mate? However It was good to see that you both managed to get to the Annual Dinner, Excellent.

Will be at Cat's next Sunday, Would be good to catch up with you guys if you can get your butts outa bed.

Cheers Swampy
