Camp Cook Off 2023 at Kalgan farm
Nev & Colin headed down on Thursday to prepare the cottage and venue for the Cook Off, by the time Cookie, Peta, Jon O, Ken S & John C arrived on Friday, the farm was looking amazing – thanks Jeff, Nev & Colin.
Cookie and his group, enjoyed a smooth run down some well-maintained dirt roads, mixed with portions of highway and a scenic run through the Stirling Ranges National Park, in nice weather.
Jeff was already onsite, and excited about the arrival of the metro riders, organizing a guided tour of the firebreak and plantation, on quad bikes Saturday morning.
The group made their way into Albany on Saturday, mid morning to take in some tourist sites, enjoy some fish and chips, and shop for ingredients for the Cook Off.
We bumped into Steve & Jane whilst wandering the streets of Albany, they were in town for a series of Musical events over the weekend.
We arrived back at the farm late afternoon and set about getting the fire pits lit and ready for the evening event.
Peter B rolled in on his sweet looking R100 around 5pm and Kots arrived around 6.30pm, to wrap up the list of contestants.
Seven contestants registered with our guest Judges (Peter B & Peta) before setting to work preparing their respective meals.
Ken S – Nepalese style Pasta and Tuna dish
Cookie – Roast Lamb and Baked vegetables (Baby potatoes, Snap peas, Corn, Baby carrots, Pumpkin & Parsnips, garnished with fresh Rosemary, in 2 camp ovens, and red wine
Jeff D – Local FRESH fish (still kicking) pan fried, Moroccan salad with handmade chips
Jon O – Lamb chops, Cous Cous, fresh Greek Salad and herbs
Nev B – Pork Steak, Shoestring crisps and fresh salad
John C- Curry and Thai vegetables
Kots – Pork & Lamb kebabs, seasoned with Rosemary, Flambeed Strawberries, marinated brioche pears and Greek yoghurt.
The competition was fearsome, with much banter, which I’m sure contributed to the high quality of the dishes.
The judges enjoyed sampling the dishes and scores reflected the high degree of effort – there was only 4 points separating the 1st and 3rd placings.
Kots, took out the top spot, collecting a $200 Auto Classic gift voucher and silk Balaclava for his outstanding and entertaining effort.
Jon O came in second only 1 point behind to claim a $100 Auto Classic voucher for his dish.
Cookie ended up third place to collect a BMW Cap courtesy of BMW Clubs Australia.
Ken S picked up a spatula for the Chook bucket award.
A great evening around the fire pit, under a lovely star lit sky, before retiring for the night.
Sunday morning saw members pitching in to load the gear onto trailer and return to main farm, before heading off in various directions. John C & Peter B headed West, Ken S & Kots were staying in the region for a few days, Cookie, Peta, Jon O, Nev & Colin headed north, arriving in metro late afternoon.
We had a great time at Kalgan and enjoyed some fantastic hospitality, thank you to all for making the event a success.
Regards
Cookie
