Gambling with the Weather Radar

Post by Bozo »

Another interesting Sunday gathering in Victoria Park with Cookie bringing his restored and freshly registered BMW R75/6 and Gerry bringing a Deus Bobber. Solid turnout with 25 bikes and a few arriving in other vehicles.

Weird weather day with radar images resembling fairy bread with coloured patches all up and down the coast. Given that going south or north had similar risk, the decision was taken to head to the site of several culinary adventures, the Blue Wren at Dwellingup. 12 riders participated on the promise of a stop if wet weather gear was needed being Ralph, Mick S, Multi Menu Mark, R90S Mark, Wightman, Andy "Shiner" Wright, MD Mike, Navigator Nick, Ted, David P, Peter Bee and Bozo.

The railway raising and other road works necessitated an interesting deviation through a construction site before having to deal with slow traffic. The run improved on Canning Mills Road and Urch Road but there was a close shave as we took the tight connection from Peet Road to Soldiers Road with a vehicle having to brake heavily on Brookton Highway. A stop at Churchmans Brook enabled a check of the high tensile bolts on the rear of one bike and the engine warnings due to contaminated fuel impacting two other bikes. Navigator Nick had only just put two new tyres on his block of flats and was concerned about encountering wet slippery roads before they were dewaxed. Another bike had low tyre pressures.

Despite the potential for unplanned activities it was an uneventful run to Nettleton Road with no sign of precipitation. However a very dark cloud loomed over the scarp and a stop was planned for Serpentine Dam to allow wet weather gear to be donned. Bozo decided that the radar was clear and despite a few sprinkles held off the wet weather gear stop until the end of Kingsbury Drive. Another radar check at Del Park Road and we zoomed up the scarp to Dwellingup with minor drizzle. Given a clear sky run to Pinjarra the group decided to go to the bakery there instead and enjoyed a pleasant run through lush green scenery with the odd patch of blue sky.

Monitoring the radar through the consumption of coffee, cakes, pies and rolls, Bozo gave short notice of a time to head home with the prospect of blue skies all the way. The return home was via Corio, Hopeland and Kargotich Roads with little traffic and blue sky.

Very pleasant to get out and only get the odd spritz. Thanks to Wightman and Ralph for photograhy and to Peter Bee for running as tail end Charlie.

Thanks Bozo for leading another successful ride and successful deviations to miss most of the showers. I missed out on the spritz but that happens when you are TEC
