Arthur Grady Event

Post by Bozo »

Wes and Bozo braved the rain to head to Fremantle to see the small 350cc Douglas Motorcycle similar to the one that Arthur Grady travelled around Australia in 1924/25.

Having first gone through the Pilbara and the Kimberly in the 1960's when roads were unsealed and before Sat Phones and Spot Trackers I got some sense of the challenges he faced. He reported being in first gear for 10 hours some days and having to ride 150 miles on horseback to get fuel....and we think the Border Run is an adventure. He averaged 10.5 mph on his circumnavigation of Australia and got 1000 miles to a gallon of oil.

Talking about adventure riders, Sprocket and Jack were also spotted at the Fremantle event amongst the fantastic array of racing Nortons, Hendersons and a HRD Vincent.

Parking was free as we put our BMWs temporarily on display.

The call of the café was too strong so we headed to Subiaco to check out Café Café as a potential club venue. Parking seemed like it was going to a major issue so we plunged through the Polly Pipe and scouted out Café Di Mondo at Midland. It was shut.

The caring sons and daughters were out in force in Midland shopping for something cheap and cheerful for Mother's Day and traffic was banked up for kilometres. We took the back way to Ridge Hill Road and climbed Gooseberry Hill for an almost passable coffee at Kalamunda.

We should not grumble. Arthur Grady used to take the engine out of his bike and carry it across rivers. We get fazed by the challenges of finding a bay marked M/C within a metre of a café.
