Alphabet Challenge 2013 2014

There has been a query on how the pointscoring on the Alphabet Challenge will work.

I hope the following clarifies the bitumen part of the challenge.

Towns can be visited in any order but to win the event you need to pick up a few bonus points.

Just visiting 24 towns with each letter of the alphabet involving just one region (say the Wheatbelt) would only get you 24 towns plus 1 region = 25 points

Travelling from Perth and visiting Australind Bunbury Collie Donnybrook Eaton Florida Golden Bay in sequence in one trip would get you 7 points for towns, 6 bonus points for sequence and 2 bonus points for regions (Peel and South West) so if the other 17 towns were not in sequence and were to the same region you would end up with 7+6+2+17 = 32 points.

It does not matter that you pass through other towns such as Mumballup between Collie and Donnybrook as long as you do not claim that town.

Maximum possible points are 26 for towns 25 for sequence 9 for regions = 60.

At Catalanos this morning Noel identified a loophole in the Alphabet Challenge Rules.

Under the General Rules the names of towns and places must be listed in “Roads and Tracks Western Australia” as places and geographical locations. This publication includes large parts of the Northern Territory and South Australia.

For example Rabbit Flat in the Tanami Desert is listed in the index and it appears would meet the criteria.

Another index listing included is Ularu.

Davey Sprocket will be disappointed that Streaky Bay is not included but Nullabor Road House is.

The first part of the rules are:

a. General rules:
• Only towns and places visited from 1 July 2013 will be eligible for this award.
• The names of towns and places must be listed in “Roads and Tracks Western Australia” as places and geographical locations.
• Towns and Places beginning with a number will be regarded as having the first letter as that of the name of the number.
• The same motorcycle does not have to be used for all 24 places but must be a motorcycle owned by the rider.
• Any number of places may be visited per trip.
• At least 24 places must be visited by June 30 2014.
• The applicant must be a paid-up member of the Club in good standing, with a valid membership at the time of the ride(s) to each of the listed places.

Its time to wind up entries for the 2013/14 Alphabet Challenge
All those wishing to enter should make sure they get their entries in to one of the club committee members by 30 May 2014 or else miss out on the prize

At least one entry has been lodged via Cookie even though well short of my aspirations.......I only got to 4 of the 9 regions and ended up missing the Z.

I suppose there is always next year.

Will there be a competition next year.

May be bonus points should be given for towns picked up on rides that are advertised in the events section of the forum with a least one months notice. A mega ride that Cookie had scoped out to Esperance would be brilliant.

Another possible change is to increase the exclusion limit to 40km from the Perth 0 mapping point...ie no Quinns Rock, no Rockingham, beyond Chidlow, beyond Mundijong, beyond Bullsbrook and beyond Gidgegannup
