Explainer: What is a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)?

Or a BMW would have it, 'throttle valve switch potentiometer'...
I had a question at brekky about setting the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and it's function on a BMW R1100.
This video is a great explainer of what and how a TPS functions, and diagnosis of problems, in relation to a BMW R1200 RT.
The earlier R1150 / R1100 have a more primitive version of these, but the TPS serves the same function.

A quick Youtube search reveals a multitude of adjustment processes for these older bikes.
