BMW Recalls 300,000 Bikes

BMW Has issued a recall - or 'technical campaign' of R and K series models produced during a period spanning almost eight years.

The rear wheel flange may crack as result of brake disc bolts or wheel nuts being over-tightened BMW says (well well well, someone must have told them, or they looked at our website).

While BMW says the fault will only occur due to incorrect maintenance, the company is to replace wheel flanges with 'a more robust part as a precaution'.

The recall applies to R and K series motorcycles produced between November 2003 and April 2011. It's understood to affect around 300,000 bikes globally.

A release from BMW said:
"As part of a technical campaign involving motorcycles of the R and K Series produced between 11.2003 and 04.2011, BMW Motorrad will replace the wheel flange of the rear suspension as a precaution.
BMW Motorrad will inform all owners of the motorcycles affected. For customers the technical campaign is free of charge.
Based on ongoing quality analyses, it was found that in the case of incorrectly carried-out maintenance work excessive torque may be applied to the brake disk bolts or to the nuts when changing wheels, contrary to the values specified in the BMW Motorrad repair instructions or operating instructions.
Cracks and damage can occur in the wheel flange as a result of excessive torques. BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to exchange the wheel flange with a more robust part as a precaution."

You have to give BMW Motorrad their due, they fixed the problem - eventually!

No good for us poor pricks who have already had to replace them. Doubt whether there would be any claim for work already done. I'll wait for the letter in the mail. Good for the guys who haven't experienced the problem (yet) or at least may have their bikes inspected at no cost to them.

Finally. I'll bet the Aus ACCC action was triggered by the yanks recall and not as a result of any local events reported to them.

I posted this on Advrider today.

I reported my failure -- which happened whilst loaded up for a trip thru the centre to Birdsville, off-road, on a bend, at 100kmh and 150km from the nearest one-horse town -- to the limp-dicked Aus federal agency in 2013. I got one subsequent phone call from them asking if I considered it a dangerous event :huh. I said safe as houses mate, considering I had no idea wtf was going on in that split second, no rear brake and was headed bush instead of negotiating a LH bend - although a vehicle coming the other way or there were trees instead of Goldfields scrub I'd probably be dead. Haven't heard from them since. Clearly they thought it was no safety problem.

Geez Shane, pretty dramatic photos. My bike has been in that position lots of times but not thru mechanical failure (and the rear wheel usually remains fixed to the bike).

I have contacted the phone number on the recall notice and explained that my flange had already been replaced and not by an 'athorised dealer'. I have been advised to send a copy of the invoice and the recall notice to BMW for 'consideration' and reimbursement. I feel confident they'll come up with the goods.

I sent an email and copy of an invoice for some repairs done to my R1200GSA which included the flange replacement. I sent the email last Thursday.
Their response is posted below. The pen is mightier than the sword.

Dear Mr Bly

Thank you for your email of 9 April 2015.

Having reviewed your concerns I’m please to advise that BMW Group Australia will refund you the $431.00 parts cost as well as a half an hour labour charge of $55.00 for the rear wheel flange repair on your motorcycle. Please allow 14 to 21 days for the funds to arrive in your account.

You will be recieving a recall letter in the next few weeks regarding the rear wheel flange. When you receive your letter we request you still make an appointment at your local BMW Dealer to have the recall carried out with the latest part. Naturally this repair will be free of change.

We thank you for bringing your concerns to our direct attention. Should you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact your local BMW Motorrad Dealer or myself.

I have been keeping an eye out for the BMW recall letter after seeing that post (as I have no time to take it to the dealer for them to look at). The letter finally came today.

You'd better be quick. I call today and the earliest I can get is 2 1/2 weeks from now. If what the tech said is to believe, they are getting 30 calls a day on this wheel flange recall campaign!

If you don't want to wait for a letter , ring AC with the VIN # and they will tell your if your bike part of the recall .
