Muffler 09 GS1200 Adventure
Muffler 09 GS1200 Adventure. Has anyone fitted a Akrapovic or Staintune muffler to a GS1200 Adventure if so how does it perform over the standard any info appreciated.

I fitted a full staintune system to my 07 R1200GS (Headers and Muffler) over a year ago. I dont think fitting the muffler alone would be worth it unless all you want is a different sound. You need the headers to eliminate the Ceramic Cat. The sound is very different (less refined and more bark) also quite a bit louder off idle, it seems to breath or rev easier with the full system. I know it improves the top end on my bike by +/- 15km/h but not sure how to quantify this in terms of power output. It does tend to encourage you to ride it differently
I am also told that from 08 on you also need to change something to do with the engine management or fuel sensor if you fit a full system, this was not required on 07 or earlier models - Dave at BMC could provide more info on the precise requirement.

That 200km/hr was in the dyno tune right Ben otherwise you'd be a hoon and the lovely GS would be crushed - that why you bought the 800?

G'day Olly:
I've got a 09 GSA. This is what I did.
1. Removed the cat from the OEM headers (search for athread on UKGSER by 'bluebird' titled Removing the Cat - or similar)
2. Got the whole system ceramic coated (bling purposes)
3. Retained the OEM muffler
Outcomes
a. Different, deeper note from the exhaust (as extensively described on UKGSER)
b. Breathed much easier and seems to pull better through mid range - modest improvement only.
c. Bike ran much leaner. Too lean IMO
So
4. Bought a Wunderlich Power Commander 2nd hand. Came with some pretty aggressive fuel mapping.
Outcome
d. Unbelievable improvement. This bike absolutely flies now.
e. Increased fuel consumption. Typical highway consumption pre WPC was 5.8l/100km; post WPC 6.4l/100km
So
5. Have backed off fuel mapping approx 500km ago
Outcome
f. Still a great improvement over standard. Bike still very quick. An F800 would throw a chain and blow a steering damper trying to keep up (there you go Ben... try and say nothing about that
)
g. Haven't refilled yet but dash reading is 5.1l/100km. I've never seen a number that low in over 27,000 on 3 different 1200's
Verdict
I loved the process and definitely happy with the outcome. And the good part is, if you take out the ceramic coating cost, it has cost less than half a Staintune muffler (or a quarter of the full Staintune system).

I had a Gs with a full Staintune on it, I agree with Jono, It does make you ride harder, I now have a GSA, seems alot less powerful, I wish I kept my staintune, plus the note from the Staintune pulled the chicks

Thanks for that guys. Just new to BMW retired enduro rider but couldn't give up the dirt altogether. Love the GSA just feel it could have a little bit more you guys know what I mean having made the mods. Wilks way sound the best cheapest way to go. I'll have to check UKGSer sight. I'll have to join the BMWMCCWA and catch up sounds like I could learn a few things live down Mandurah way.
