f650cs won't start - hasn't run in 5 years.

Post by chips »

Hi,
I have had a 2003 f650cs parked in the garage last 5 years.
Just tried to start it......
New battery, new fuel. turn key.... it turned a bit then nothing.

I can't remember if I need clutch in, neutral gear for start to go ahead etc....

I have found that when in gear, take clutch in, the bike seems stuck in gear.
I rolled the bike around a bit. Which seemed to loosen up the wheel and let it roll when in gear with the clutch in.

I don't know if it makes any difference or what happened but now when the battery is connected the starter cranks over! no matter the key or kill switch position.

I have checked there's a spark- can see it from the lead when I remove it from the plug. And i got zapped.

And I put a small amount of fuel into the throttle intake.

It still fails to start. just keeps cranking the starter?

Any more clues?

Sounds like an interesting tuning day job :|

But it sounds like a switch / sensor is stuck / frozen / faulty somewhere.

If connecting the battery causes the starter to crank, I'd be starting at the ignition / key switch. It appears to be stuck on somehow...

There was a recall in 2013 for at least some if not all of the 650's to rectify a difficult starting issue.
