F650GS ABS front brake bleed

Post by Alex 650 »

Hi
I recently purchased a 11/00 BMW F650GS the very next day my front brake lever could pull al the way into the handlebar grip and no brakes at all.

Please can somebody give me some advice as I cannot even ride the bike.
•I have tried bleeding the bike normally.
•I have taken the bike for a ride and tried to activate the ABS multiple times
•I have used a vacuum pump to suck the air out
•I have pulled the master cylinder apart and put it back together
•I have bought the Haynes and BMW factory workshop manuals and read front to back
• I have called the Motorcycle mechanic 4 weeks waiting time.
• I have ran the GS-911 which only informs and clears faults

Please can somebody help me, I'm willing to pay I just need to get the bike running and stop the wife from teasing me about buying a lemon ( yellow paint job.

Thanks in advance
Alex

Hi Alex I understand you have to wait 4 weeks to see a mechanic. I would suggest you try Autoclassic BMW. Their waiting times are certainly less than 4 weeks if you explain the problem.
Give Allan Gooch a ring on 93118329 to book in

Hi Bill thanks for your reply Mate. I have decided to put an overhaul kit through the front master cylinder even though when I pulled it apart it seemed ok. I Rang BMW Autoclassic in Burswood and they only supply the plunger o'ring spring and boot at Au$68 but don't and can't supply the piston overhaul kit. They can supply the whole front master cylinder ex Germany for Au$347. I rang Munichmotorcycles and MotorworksUK same thing. So I will ring Allan Gooch.
Thanks Alex

Front master cylinder overhaul kit 22 GBP delivery within a week https://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop ... 5_65_HA_50

When you dissasembled the master cylinder was there evidence of brake fluid passing to behind the piston/plunger?
If it was wet then replace plunger and check bore. If dry then problem may be elsewhere

Cheers

Hi JonO
Thanks for the reply. I just pulled the front master cylinder again and you and the guys at the bmwmccwa tuning Day were spot the piston is passing.when I had a closer look there is a tiny split in the piston rubber ring. It is impossible to buy these piston overhaul kits so I bought a second hand one from the Uk. Thanks for all your help guys

That squirting fluid was a signal all not well.
As I mentioned the club is a great resource pool, so ask away and use the resource, that's part of being a member.
A brake manufacturer stopped supplying some parts to rebuild master cylinders when a person in the US had a failure and subsequent accident after rebuilding brakes, the manufacturer was in court in a flash! So for certain brakes of Italian manufacture you may be able to buy the bits for your Master cylinder from Ian Gowanloch Ducati if you supply the correct details of your master cylinder or you may be able to get a brake shop in Perth to rebuild it.
Good luck

Thanks for your reply Alex
Yes that fluid squirting out of my Master cylinder on Tuning day was a sign of something wrong.
And after your reply I now understand why I can't find a master cylinder piston overhaul kit anywhere in the world.
Brembo, Ducati, KTM, Aprilla...I ve researched them all to no avail.
But Ian Gowanloch Ducati sounds promising, I will Google and do my research now.
Thanks

Hi
Does anyone know if any other bikes use the same Brembo front Master cylinders as the 2001 F650
Example(not sure yet) KTM Duke 690 or something else?
Thanks

I have got some bits from Frank 0437 369 642 in Samaria in Victoria. I know he has wrecked a 2002 650 CS. Have you contacted him for a second hand part?

His store is at http://WWW.USEDMOTORCYCLEPARTSONLINE.COM.AU

Hi Bozo, thanks for the reply. I have already bought one from eBay in the U.K., otherwise I would have bought one from Frank, as the site you suggested looked very good and I'm sure I will use it in the future and hopefully others read this and it helps them out. Thanks again mate, Alex.

Hi Guys. I think I missed this conversation. I have used Perth brakes in Welshpool, who have overhauled my old airhead master cyclinders for very cheap. (resleeve and new seals)
