Rubber bands

Post by Dickens Cider »

Hi Y'all.
I'm looking for advice/opinions on tyres for 1100gs.
I bought the bike with Metzlers, wore them out, and fitted the set got with the bike, which were used, and as it turns out they didn't last very long, the rear had an 'over-inflation bulge'...
So just a few weeks ago I ditched them n favour of a more off road tyre. I got a set of Shinko, tractor tyres...
Off road they are awesome, I can chew up expanses of pea gravel around dams, firebreaks and 4wd tracks, I can go anywhere.
I like to go fishn, and exploring places, especially if there's a sign saying no entry, for example stirling dam. I've dropped the old girl a few times on the gravel on the old tyres (and already on the new..) But stationary thankfully.
Trouble is, these tyres are about a 70/30 off road, and I need the opposite, 70/30 on road.
I have to get to where I wanna be by road, and I'm a bit scared of these tractor tyres, they have very soft wall, and cornering at speed feel like they are going to roll off the rims, me no likey.
They vibrate on the road, like a tractor...
So I've looked online, and I see much the same choices, scrambler enduro tyres like tractor tyres that I have, or smooth/round with deep grooves, like the Metzler.
Like I said, I had the Metzlers, but they were on road only, they were killers on gravel, but tyre pressure was likely mitigating factor.
I went around Lake Navarino last weekend, following 4wd tracks, going round the mud holes, and riding up through bush tracks.
This is where I wanna be, but I also spend a good deal of time on rd, going from back of boddington to collie etc, but I don't want to be limited to tarmac either.
Suggestions appreciated.
I might come down on Sunday, but my bike's a pig, Not exactly cafe racer, leave all that to the harley blokes, sitting n cafe's...

Gday Steve,
I’m sure you will get a few opinions.
The TKC 70’s are getting very good reports and fit the 70:30 Road:dirt profile. I’ve also had very good life out of the Heidenau’s but they do get noisy on the tar as they wear.

Come along on a Sunday it’s not all about coffee and shiny bikes, we have a good number of gravel surfers and chook chasers who come along.

Cheers

Thanks, I'd looked at the conti's, they do look a lot more appealing than land rover tyres, but I have recollections of slipping sideways down rutted tracks. I only have enough strength to pick up my bike once, maybe twice.
Are there any eye witnesses as to the capability of these rubber bands in our local conditions, pea gravel, gravel rd's firebreaks.
I nearly killed myself last weekend, following 4wd's around Navarino, went up a track that looked god, but had tree roots across it, forming steps.
Dropped the bike, ended up having to hold it up and walk alongside it to get it off the staircase, the tyres were brilliant, I got out and went back down, survived.
Definitely beyond capability, but times happen, shit happens, and I end u in the shit, just gotta be realistic, I'm freakin 56, not 26.
But any witness testimonials?
And where's a reliable bike shop down this way (Rockingham)?
I bought a new battery in september when I bought this tractor of a machine, now I'm having the abs light issues again.
Don't like being a newbie and getting ripped off.
Shout out to Munichs, in melville.
Anyway I',, try and make it down tomorrow, can I bring my car, (94 e34 V8) don't like riding threw town, specially if it's wet..
