You are right Steve Xmas in July, 30th June : off-road and tar options, camping or comfort accom great food, bring partners , get outa the city and mix with fellow club members for a great weekend.

G'Day Slackers,
A small group (total 3, maybe 4) are leaving on Tuesday 7 Aug...
Initially, we are aiming to get to Mt Dare for the Off Centre Rally (OCR) via Great Central Road to Warburton and then thru the APY Lands of SA before heading for Lamberts Geographical Centre and then Mt Dare. En route we will visit Surveyor Generals Corner (NT/SA/WA Junction). From there the plan is to do the Simpson Desert including Poeppels Corner (NT/SA/Qld Junction) and onto Birdsville. We then visit Haddon's Corner (Qld/SA Junction) and onto Cameron Corner (SA/NSW/Qld Junction) via Cordillo Downs and Innamincka. We then head South (?) and the group may split up. I need to be in Port Augusta to join a Group Ride meeting up on 19 August and stay with them for 12 days before heading westward and home.

Well my ride to the OCR and Simpson came to a screaming smoking halt just over the Warralakin Bridge on the Great Eastern Highway.
While doing 110kmh the rear shock absorber snapped the rod just above the yoke and pivoted the shock absorber rearward in to the rear wheel. This then jammed it between the swing arm and the trye which locked everything up, with smoke and burning rubber I rode the bike speedway style to a stop 88 meters later.
Robin and Digger watched from behind as this all happened thinking when is he going to crash, has the motor or transmission seized, whats going on.
Luckily no oncoming traffic at the time and no road trains.
A call to the RAC and they came and picked me up and dropped me back in Perth as the shock absorber could not be replaced within 24 hours.
Digger and the crew carried on once they knew I would not be stranded on the side of the road.
Thanks to Digger, Chris, Robin and JP for your assistance in getting the bike off the road and waiting until we had a plan in place.
Have a great ride and I will be thinking of you for the next couple of weeks.

WOW....good to hear you didn't crash. Riding with out a shock in Chile for 2,000k's came in handy then?

Hi Koos,
It was the XC with the Ohlins BM636 Shock
Brand new Michelin Desert Race trye is toast, flat spot complete worn the blocks off.
The princess has a Wilbers aftermarket shock fitted.
Now trying to see if I can get parts instead of replacing whole unit.

We were only talking about your skill at riding bikes with damaged suspension recently at Cats.
This makes three I think... Border Run, South America, Warralakin. Normally it is three strikes and you get a suspension.

Bozo is correct. I was discussing said topic with Anth on the weekend when there was only two (2) episodes to refer to.
I'm beginning to wondering if Anth moves the broken shock from one bike to the next... just for practice That's three (3) now!

Pictures of the broken shock
Yellow spring has moved back into the tyre, the clevis eye at the base of the spring is now rotated to the horizontal position and hard against the tyre also after the rod snapped, top of the swing arm is on the right as the picture file image has rotated in the file transfer process.
From below looking up at the rotated clevis eye hard against the tyre with the yellow spring above
The parts removed, rod broken at commencement of the threaded section of the rod

The shaft looks to have a progressive failure as part of the broken end is rubbed and rounded, it however dose not show signs of corrosion from a long slow gradual failure or a large area of a crystalline surface you would expect with a sudden failure.
There was a warning sign just before it locked up, however the noise is normally associated with a smooth sealed road.
Just before it locked up a tyre whine/hum developed, I thought this unusual as I was not riding on a road surface that should make this noise.
What had actually happened was the broken shock had rotated rearward enough to push the small mudguard just behind the shock back on to the tyre, this created a whine for about 3 seconds before the 2mm of plastic wore through and then the shock spring locked the rear wheel up.
