Club Suggestions?

Post by Swampy »

Now that we have a newly elected club committee I would like to make a couple of suggestions/ideas for them to consider.

One club member mentioned to me that he would like to see established functions such as the Annual Dinner and club Christmas Party for example have a venue planned, researched and with a firm date decided on by the committee early enough for people to mark the date on their calendars in advance so as to avoid clashes of interests which may affect their ability to be able to attend these functions on those dates.

Secondly and this strictly my own opinion, I would like these functions be held in localised country towns within a few hours ride/drive of the Metro area as opposed to venues in the metropolitan area.

My reasons are that having a function in the metro area may be very attractive to some but in my opinion I think it restricts one's ability to relax and enjoy a few ales without the added outlay of expenses to catch a taxi to and from the venue or conversely having to elect someone as a skipper for the night which then restricts the elected persons ability to enjoy the evening. Of course there is the argument that you could book a room for the night but I don't think that quite holds the same appeal and character of a good old fashioned country hotel!

Venues in the recent past have included New Norcia, Jennacubine and a few weeks ago now Greenhills but there are any number of towns within easy traveling of Perth who I guess would welcome a club such as ours and probably at a cheaper price then anywhere in the metro area!

All these venues are an easy ride/drive distance so those people who partners don't/won't pillion up can drive up and join in the festivities late into the night knowing there is a bed waiting for them to collapse into whenever they are ready or if they feel the need return to town, the choice is yours!!

And what's better then a hearty breakfast the next morning, reliving and sharing the previous nights exploits with the very same people you partied with the night before?

A nice easy ride/drive home again afterwards to finish off a great weekend!!

Just some of my thoughts for the committee and members to think about so I am opening this up for discussion with other club members and partners for their thoughts and opinions?

Not sure has to why you are suggesting this, as this is what the club is doing and has been doing for years.
This idea that the club has in its head doesnt work. Go back and look at the number of people attending these functions. Very few, and the same people attending. This is not a club event when we dont attract new members to attend

What I've suggested for years is that we hold events in the metro to attract all members.
As this does allow for people to attend and able to go home by taxi. Without not having to book accommodation.
Having it country all the time limits as to who can go.

But, as per the words mentioned at the AGM " We're open to ideas ". Yes you may be open to ideas but nothing changes.

From memory the function that was held in town some years ago around 80 people attended not he normal 20.

So, if the committee will take on these ideas. Who knows.

Common excuse I hear is it is too costly. Question: What / or Why is the club amassing a large bank balance for? Maybe it go towards these functions to make it available for all to attend.

But I've said this for years.

Swampy, I agree that there needs to more forward planning with the dates and venues for annual events, I tried to get some support for this in my brief time on the committee but certain issues just seem to drift. as far as metro versus country the members need to be surveyed as to their preference, part of been in a democracy.
The AGM was about a week ago we had a candidate who ran on a platform of consultation and planning, which did not get much support, so basically the majority have voted for no change. Have a think about that over the next 12 months.

Thank you both Colin and Ahab for sharing your thoughts and ideas on this subject!

I for one appreciate your taking the time to give some feedback, I put this subject on the forum so as to encourage other club members to debate what for some has been a thorn in the side for some members for quite some period of time now.

I invite all of you to bring your thoughts, ideas and wishes on ANY matter of your choosing pertaining to the future direction of the great club.

The committee has always welcomed new ideas and suggestions and now with a freshly elected group of guys and girls steering the ship I think we as a group should bring our collective thoughts and suggestions to their attention for them to evaluate for possible further action as they deem necessary after all that is what we elected them to do!!

It is very easy to be complacent and sit back and criticize from the sidelines but unless each one of us get off our collectives and become more involved by voicing our collective concerns, ideas and suggestions to the committee nothing will change for us.

I believe that our current committee are the best we could wish and we should be supporting them as much as it is possible because it is a thankless job and they face the impossible task of attempting to please everyone which is an impossibility.

So I take my hat off to them for dedicating so much of their time and effort week in and week out during the year for you, the club members!!

So guys and girls over to you, let's hear your thoughts and ideas and lets see how we can progress what is already a terrific club to one which is better for each and everyone of you

some points you raise.

ideas and thoughts have been put forward for years, nothing changes.

just remember a ship will only change course when the captain says too, hhhhmmmmmm.

People will criticize because we the members are not been listened too. Yes you might hear us, but you have to listen.

Ahab, Cookie has responded and acknowledged the current problems so now let us give the committee a chance to meet and discuss the issues at hand.

I am confident that at least some points can be resolved quite easily and after re reading your views and what has been suggested a few times in the past by a few members that Annual Events be held Local one year and Country the next could please both sides as an easy solution?

Thanks again for responding and I know for a fact that we all would like to see some of our old stalwarts return to the club again once changes occur. 8)
