Flip face helmet feedback

Post by Istanman »

G'day guys - I am purchasing a new helmet shortly and have considered the following:

Shoei - Multitec
Nolan N102 Flip
RXT Duotech Flip

Does anyone have any feedback regarding the above helmets. I am concerned about the additional wind noise from the helmet construction (hinges etc). I consider that they have advantages in being able to leave your lid on when refueling, getting a bit cooler more quickly when stopped without removing sunnies, earplugs etc. (I ride a road bike)

I am currently using a Suomy Vandal full face and really like it and if I was to go a full face non-hinged helmet I'd replace it with the same or the new Shoei XR1100 in a really particularly 'bright' colour scheme. 8)

Any feedback would be welcomed.
Cheers, Istanman.

Pros & Cons for both. Now, if you were a girl, I'd say go the flip front 'cause pulling down a full-face just makes helmet hair even more problematic!

Thanks for the hair advice Toni. I'd hate to have my mullet messed up.

I can only comment on the Nolan. I'm generally happy with mine apart from the wind noise that you mentioned, its a good versatile lid, great on a warm day when you can open it up and catch flies in your gob.
I still find some servos make me remove it before switching on the pump even when the helmet is open. I think the nolan is also the cheapest flip on the market.

I have a Nolan N102 bought in 2007, its just about due for replacement now. The hinge and lock mechanism is getting a bit dodgy, so factor in a 3 year life span. I also bought the blue tooth kit for it, it lasted about 18 months. I was not hard on either unit and these life spans seem consistent with reports I have read. Nolan has released an improved helmet the N103, but for some reason it does not seem to be available in Perth (least not that I have found). If you like full faced helmets why bother with a flip.
I use the flips because they are easy to put on over glasses and earphones, also easier to have a drink of water along the road without having to remove helmet or wear a hydration pack and hose.

Cheers

Jono, thanks for your reply - 'bout 3 years life hey? I probably retire my helmets around this time frame any way. I think you are right - I'll stick with a full face helmet.
Thanks, Istanman.
