I must thank Emma from NSW, who has done a bit of fingerwork on Google to explore these tools more thoroughly and has communicated some of that info to me. It seems that these older style diagnostic tools are really simple, so simple that a few could/should be made in a Saturday therapy session using off-the shelf bits from Dick Smith.
I'll try making one and nominate a volunteer to try it out, then anyone who wants one of their own should take the recipe and get busy. If you are interested in reading more about it, contact me by private mail and I'll pass on the information that Emma emailed over.
