Natural Arch near The Gap. Some idiot fell 7 metres from here injuring himself a few days before we arrived. Probably trying to get that ‘perfect selfie’. Stay behind the guardrails folks...

Castle Rock in the Porongerups. Tough 4.4km climb (return journey).

The final obstacle at Castle Rock leading to a walk platform at the very top. Worth the journey!

I’m currently at Northcliffe and will camp at Shannon tomorrow night (Thursday) before heading toward the coast.

Distance travelled to date - 461 km.

Great photos and commentary thanks Digger. Our property is about 20km from Northcliffe so we know the town well. Looks like you are in the pub, beer cold and food is OK. Stay safe. Enjoy the cooler weather.

G’day Slackers,

Update end of Day 18.
TOUGH Day today. Real tough. Toughest so far. Did I mention that today was tough?
Conditions (road and track) weren’t ideal and the terrain did not help. Lots of rolling country and hills, some of which were very challenging. I’m currently in Walpole and head for Peaceful Bay Caravan Park tomorrow (Saturday) night.

Image
I have been able to use mostly roads with low traffic volumes. That changed today when I had to travel Highway 1 for 30km. Not ideal.

Image
The longest leg was 110km between towns. I decided to break up the journey by staying at Shannon Campground, a former Mill site. There are 60 sites and two cabins...first come first served basis. Very limited infrastructure there.

Image
There is a fire ban in place. The only exemption is the chip heater used for heating water for showers.

Image
I didn’t bring cooking gear with me and had no way of heating beans and water for coffee. Improvise, adapt, overcome. The chip heater was put to work.

Image
Corrugations are no fun regardless of what you are driving (or riding). Even at 12kph these were painful.

Stats for today (Friday)
Distance - 73.9km
Time 5 hours 14 mins
Avg - 14.1 kph
Max - 66.7 kph (did I mention the hills)
Total so far - 576km

G’day Snowflakes,

Update - End of Day 21. Arrived at destination (Albany).
A tough day to finish the trip on. A 60km day most of which was into a headwind. Had an interesting night on Saturday and passed two Kidney stones. One at 7.30pm and the other at 2.30am. This was not the first time for me. Last time was 11 years ago. Kidney stones provide are a new dimension in pain. Unfortunately, I was not in a position to seek assistance as the caravan park was isolated from the nearest town. I’ll seek treatment when I return to Perth.
I catch a Bus and return to Perth tomorrow (Tuesday). See you on the other side (of my face mask).

Image
I’m glad it is/was he last day...time to return home. The smile didn’t last long once I hit the headwind.

Image
Bloody wind.

Image
BOOM! Job done. Time to fatten up for the next one.

Stats for today.
Distance - 56.9km.
Time - 4 hours 2 mins
Avg - 14.1kph
Max - 35.3kph
Total for journey - 723km.

Excellent work with your latest video. Enjoyable to watch and a very authentic account of cycling the South West.

Very rarely does any other person or organisation appear in the credits but now hair and makeup!

I told you it was based on a true story...

Its a tough challenge to look this good every day on set while filming. I usually travel with a small crew to meet my needs and to ensure everything goes seamlessly. There is the cook, bike mechanic, hair stylist and masseuse (to massage my ass) as well a Fixer for those difficult border crossings.

Actually it was a Shout Out to my sister in law who does my hair once a year just for shits and giggles.

A very capable sister in law. There is a lot of raw material in the club where she could make a major impact.

Keep up the good work digger...

Can't believe you missed that roo on the side of the road. Great bit of riding especially with a trailer in tow. That was close... Lucky day for you :P

Hello Snowflakes,

In keeping with my New Year's Resolution I depart on Saturday with a small group of 4WD’s to spend 6 weeks on the road exploring the Pilbara and Kimberley Regions of WA. Jacki will join me when she flys into Broome in a couple of weeks time before touring Gibb River Road.
Our progress can be monitored in real time by clicking on the link for our satellite tracker. The link is here;

I’ll update this Forum as the trip progresses.
