Difficult dry river bed crossing…
Just outside Punmu Community heading East toward the NT. We were hoping to resupply fuel and water there but clearly we weren’t welcome.
Did I mention the fly’s were bad!

Well 33 cross roads on the Canning Stock Route. Middle of bum f*** nowhere.
Jupiter Well on the Gary Junction Road. The Well was a leftover from an exploration expedition during the 1960’s. The water quality was good enough to keep you alive if stranded here.
Chris had a front puncture just outside Kiwirrkurra. At the same time JP discovered he had lost his bag. We may have to backtrack for 150km to Jupiter Well.

We backtracked till last light and then bush camped. We set off early the following morning and found the bag intact in the middle of the road.
We returned to Kiwirrkurra to top up fuel and water and had a look at Len Beadell’s ration truck which was destroyed by fire in 1960.
The story of the burnt out truck.

Update Day 8 cont…
Crossing into the Northern Territory. No fanfare out here.
Refuelling at Kintore…24/7 fuel available using credit or debit card. That makes transiting thru these Communities seamless and easy.
ANZAC Hill at Alice Springs. It would have been great to attend the Dawn Service here but we missed it by a few days. The Hill overlooks the Town and gives a great view of the layout of the Town below.
Lest We Forget.

Dinner at King Creek Cattle Station Stay. Camel burgers all round.
Dinner and festivities at the Outback Pioneer Hotel at Yulara, the Tourist Hub at Uluru.
It rained (drizzle) on the morning of departure. We took over the camp kitchen to pack up outta the rain.

A permit is required to travel Great Central Road. Easily obtained and free…apply on line.
While at Warakurna we decided to visit the Giles Weather Station. The Station was primarily established for gaining regular weather data to assist in rocket trials in the 50’s and 60’s.
JP and Chris in front of the first Rocket remains fired from Woomera which were found 60km from Giles.
The Grader used during the construction of most of the Outback roads with Len Beadell for the purpose of atomic bomb and rocket testing.
While leaving Warakurna I mistakenly took the road to their Airfield…in 3rd gear and just suddenly had the front wheel wash out from under me. A legacy from the rains the night before.

While refuelling at Warakurna we were warned of roaming camels and were told of a driver who wrote his 4WD off the night before. This was the animal that caused the write off.
Refuelling at Warburton…$3 per litre. Outright price gouging in my opinion. We only paid $2.50 per litre at Kuniwaritji which is at Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route…far more isolated then Warburton.
We visited ‘The Zoo’ opposite Tjkariliya Roadhouse. If you squint your eyes and use your imagination they look like a herd of elephants!
More of the Zoo.
60km short of Laverton (our destination for end of Day 14) Chris had a rear puncture. Bummer!
Usually the front wheel will ‘stand up’ the screw/nail/stick and the rear wheel will cop it. In this case it was a nail.
While pulling out the tube, it ripped in half. I’ve never seen that before. Too bad if you wanted to patch it. We fitted a new tube and only lost about 40 minutes.

Can I get an Amen to that!
The route home…interesting journey.
JP was still struggling with the rolled ankle and will be seeking medical advice. The injury could be worse then first thought.
See you on the other side!

Looking forward to the Big Budget Movie!

Update of the update...
It works out that scans have confirmed that JP has fractured his ankle. He can now join the list of Riders who have 'broke a bone and rode it home'.
He must be a tough cookie (tougher than i thought).
Well done JP...heal completely and quickly.

Re: So much to do; so little time!
Thanks for the effort in sharing the ride with our fellow club members Steve.
Yep Weber B Fracture (but very stable luckily). Moon boot for four weeks .
What I sometimes lack in overall riding ability I make up for by 'just never giving up'.
Plus grabbing some ice from your beer esky each night and wacking it on my ankle helped. Its been nine years since I did my other ankle so hopefully I go another nine years before the next one!
A great ride with top blokes!

Anyone else see a little symmetry here?Digger wrote: ↑Fri 06 May, 2022 7:23 am

Re: So much to do; so little time!
The only symmetry I can see is that in the 4wd incident it left a camel back on the ground and a write off was involved. In Diggers incident a camelbak hit the ground and he came right off.
