I’m staying at a Farmstay….Big Valley Campsite, a working sheep station. By coincidence, they were selling cutlets and roasts. I guess it pays not to get attached to the flock.

Update - End of Day 3.
We were in control of our destiny until we left our driveway. We got to Murchison before experiencing difficulty. We’ve lost a day but should be able to make it up.
Our journey could be further disrupted by road closures further north.
See captions below.

Easing into the trip…first bush camp south east of Payne’s Find on the Maroubra Road.

Jacki’s a keeper…and a great cook. Jacki weaving her magic in the field kitchen.

Image
Jokers Tunnel south of Yalgoo. This schmuck found 3kg of gold in 50kg of rock and kept tunnelling thru a hill without finding another ounce. Bummer.

Update Day 3 cont…

Yalgoo…there is nothing keeping these small towns alive anymore. Lots of business’ closing down.

Our route to Murchison.

Image
We left Murchison heading for Mt Augustus. 40km out of Murchison we broke a rigid brake line…not sure how. Had to limp back to Murchison with no brakes using gears to control the speed. A bit dodgy.

Update Day 3 cont…

Image
Spoke to the local Shire Mechanic who was happy to have a look at it after knock off. The other option was a RAC tow to Geraldton.

Image
He was able to fashion a replacement pipe and get us going. Took him a couple of hours and I was happy to pay. Otherwise, we would have lost 2 days waiting for recovery and repair.

Update - End of Day 8
We have made our way northwards and arrived safely at Karijini National Park to explore the ancient landscapes. Absolutely stunning!
From here we head for Australia’s hottest town, Marble Bar, where we will do some local exploring.

Update - End of Day 10.
We have stayed at Marble Bar, Australia’s hottest town, for two nights and will now make our way to Carawine Gorge and Skull Springs Road. We are at the most Northern point for this journey and so it’s all South from here. We could be off the grid for 48-72 hours.
See captions below.

Day 10 update cont…

The Marble Bar, the Towns name sake. It’s not Marble, it’s actually Jasper.

We took a drive to the Corunna Air Base that the Japanese looked for but could never find. Bombing raids were conducted from this Air Base to Japanese bases in Indonesia and were very successful.

There is still some infrastructure present and a lot of debris after the Americans withdrew from the area.
