Greetings from London - and a question about my R100

Post by PatricP »

First of all hi to everyone. I am an active BMW UK / UKGser forum user but will likely move to Perth in a couple of months...

I used to own an R1200GS and the R1200GSA, which I both sold. I now own a 1978 R100RS, which I have rebuilt over the last year.

In London I often carry out work on the bike in a friends workshop and pay him for parts and labour on any help I need. This helped me to keep costs down but when for example the gear box needed rebuilding I relied on him to do it as I did not have the expertise.

I have spent 1800 pounds on the bike and about 2500 pounds on rebuilding it. It looks lovely and runs sweet and now I am torn if I should sell it or take it with me to Perth. So here are my questions:

1. Is there a bike shop/mechanic in Perth that can repair boxer twins? This is just in case I have any major problems.
2. Will a R100RS (without fairing) be able to cope with the heat in the summer without an oil cooler?
3. Do you think I should ship the bike to Perth? It will cost me about 2000 AusDollars from London. If I sell it in London I will get about 2500 dollars for it. I will make a big loss selling it.

Let me know what you think.

Hello Patric

You were too quick for us, we were all out riding over the weekend

You can find some good buys in Australia and all told unless you have a real emotional attachment to a particular bike you are probably better off to sell up and buy a bike that suits you after you settle in to your new home!

All the best

Hallo Patric

I'll have a look in my garage; I may have a R100 or two, from that era. The other thing you could do, is buy a nice R90S while you are there and import it into Australia. It will be worth much more here and you only pay 10% GST on the Europe selling price on pre '89 motorcyles (import duty exempt)

Patric, see you when you get here. There are a few past & current UKGS'ers here in Perth and a bunch of rowdy old farts that grow on you over time.
