Weekend overnighter 27th & 28th April

Post by Cookie »

Hello fellow riders
Cookie is planning to head out on Saturday 27th April for an overnight camp and return Sunday 28th - detail as follows

McDermid Rock (around 550km from Perth) on Hyden Norseman road (~160km of gravel road) has toilets and basic facilities, walking trails / lookout.
Note: No Water available onsite & around 400km return trip from Hyden (closest fuel, unless you head out to Norseman).

If the Hyden road has rain, I will revise plans accordingly - possibly camp at or near Hyden.

If anyone would like to come along, let me know via pm or forum and I will update information as time gets closer.
Regards

Yes I hope to be on the ride.
Using google maps its 195 kms from Hydin to the McDermid Rock camp site, a few extra to the Lake Johnston Camping area. Round trip of 400kms between fuel stops. The camp site is only about 105kms from Norseman.

Getting there on a GS...

Post by Digger »

Cookie, i am interested in going...but as usual, will probably take some backroads.
For those who may be interested, i will be going via Pingelly, Kondinin and Kalgarin but sticking to backroads (mostly unsealed, 444 km to Hyden) commencing with Ashendon and Metro Roads. The planned roads are GS friendly (big bike friendly) providing you have had some 'limited' unsealed experience. In the main, the roads are as good as the Hyden to Norseman Road. If there has been some rain prior then i will modify the route accordingly.
Probably meet at Dome Mundaring for those North of the River and meet at the Southern end of Ashendon Road for those South of River.
The return journey will be a mix of unsealed and blacktop.

I'm interested Cookie. I 'm a novice on dirt though. What sort of level of off road experience is required? Mine hovers just above zero.

Cheers

Hello Brian

I will be on my road bike, so your GS will be very capable - if the road gets wet in the day or two before - we will go to option 2 and avoid big dirt km's

Also interested, but like Serpy, have little to no experience on dirt, I assume we're talking dirt rather than shitty pea gravel ? I did the BMW course last year at Kirup with no issues. riding a GSA.

Great doing it. I'd assume its prudent to carry a full 10L fuel can, some waternd.a bit to eat and plenty to drink.

Hello fellow riders, as per my original post - assuming no rain, the road should be a relatively easy ride for a GS or GSA, I have been across the full 300km of this road before, in good conditions, on my RT with road tyres and luggage.

IF it has rained the road can turn to bad very quickly - in which case I won't go there, we will revise plans accordingly.

For those concerned about the 400km round trip for fuel, let me know as we may be able to carry fuel for you, if you don't have the capacity.

There is talk of some riders heading out on Friday and meeting up with us on Saturday.

Looking to meet at Caltex Midvale 7.15am for departure at 7.30 am Saturday 27th, ride out will be black top country roads, until we are 50km east of Hyden, then dirt roads for ~150km to the proposed campsite at McDermid Rock.

I'm up for that. I can carry fuel. Confirm no water at campsite. See you Midvale 7.30 on 27th.

Conditions are still looking good, we will meet up with Bill and Nev around lunchtime Saturday in Hyden. I will be home on Thursday if anyone wants to catch up for a coffee and refine details, send a PM if you don't know where I live.
