R12GS, HP2 Rear Disk Flange Crack - Check

Post by jono »

Recently two club members reported cracks in the rear disk carrier of their respective R12 motorcycles, one of these nearly led to a serious accident.
Riders of early R12GS and HP2 motorcycles are urged to check their rear disk carriers asap for signs of this problem. Thereafter you should check at every tyre change or service interval.
The problem seems to be concentrated on the early 04/05/06 models before the rear carrier was upgraded.

The best way to check is to remove the rear wheel it is only a 10 minute job.

Steps.

1. Park your bike on the center stand and use a tie down strap between the center stand and the front wheel to prevent the bike inadvertently being rocked off the center stand when you are working on the rear wheel.
Image
2. Place the bike in gear, say 3rd, to stop the wheel turning. Then loosen the rear wheel bolts using a T50 Torx socket
Image
3. Remove the rear wheel and use a torch to examine the disk carrier flange, specifically looking for hairline cracks near the outer bolt holes that are used to secure the disk to the carrier.
Image
4. If no cracks then replace the wheel and re torque bolts to 60NM - Done
5. If you do see cracks then please read the Disk Carrier Post in the members section of the club website and consult your mechanic to get the problem fixed.

Shane, that's a great job. Thanks for doing that. I rekon even the ol' buggers amongst us could probably give that a nudge, eh Swamp? 8) I''ll give it go.

:: back on topic:: :mrgreen: Checked my disc carrier last night on my '08 R4V. Looks good with no signs of failures. Must be one of the easiest rear motorcycle wheels to remove in the world. Not a chain in sight :lol:
Clever buggers those Girmens 8)

Davey, If my bike was as Old and as Abused as yours I think I certainly would check it out :shock: ................................. Now this "Flange" you are talking about, I gather you are talking about the one on your bike and not the other one :?: :?: :?: :P

Ps. Now why don't you let everyone know why you didn't cook the snags and onions at Bully's Tuning Day this arvo as promised :?: :P

Keep Smiling. Swampy :twisted:

It's an '08 so if that's old, your'e a dinosuar :lol:
Abused :?: Well they are "Adventure bikes" :mrgreen:
After all it's a GS. GS refers to either Gelände/Straße (German: off-road/road) or Gelände Sport. Unlike yours which is a R1200 SP.... (Show Pony) :lol:
Jono and I were looking at yours shaking our heads saying "It's just unatural" 8) and maybe you should ride a Hardly Davison seeing as you like to "show & shine......

C'mon Swamp, hurry up and get those new knobblies, and we can get some dust on yer rims...(like mine). (Recent roadworks :lol:)

Oh yeah,
where was I,? when I was supposed to be cooking the onions :?: :?: :?: that is the big question..even Bully called me to see where the "onion chef" was..

Well Swamp, instead of dilly dallying and procrastinating :shock: :shock: for weeks & weeks :shock:(I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not quite sure 8) ), I went and had some new hoops fitted to the "used & abused". Heidenau Scout K60's. Got a good price from Pete @ Tyres for Bikes in Vic Park. Not cheap, but I rekon I've had 20K out of the rear (even Bully put some on it :shock: ).
I'm told they can howl a bit, bit I'm an ear plug fan, and I can't hear much over the Bee Gees & Engleburt Humperdink :lol:.

When I asked about new batteries in the Tyre Pressure Sensors, he gave me the :shock: look..... :lol: :lol:

So, with some advice about "take it a bit easy for a few kays because of the mold release agent wax", some new hoops and a couple of hours to spare,that was all the encouragment I needed to get lost and then find my way to the tuning day.

You've heard of the old saying "wax on, wax off" :lol: :lol: :lol:

Well Done Davey, An excellent explanation and beutifully presented 8)

I thought it was because you had a new set of n.....s that you wanted to work on, But nothing so exciting eh? :lol:

Meanwhile, I will take a look at the Heidenau's this week sometime :P

Swampy :twisted:

PS. Watch you don't wear to much wax off your flange mate :lol:

At last nights club meeting I mentioned that my complaint to the Dept of Infrastructure (Federal) about my broken carrier was currently under investigation. Recently, the investigator ask me if I knew anyone else who had experienced the same carrier failure*. If yes, he asked that I ask them to make a formal complaint to his agency by email asap. He can only consider 1st hand complaints received from the bike owner, not 3rd party stories.

* He is only focussed on actual carrier failures (not cracks only) and particularly those failures which occurred whilst riding. Any supporting photos of the failed carrier would assist the investigation.

Email to: vinvestigations@infrastructure.gov.au

Perhaps mark your email to the attention of Karl.

These are some of the details Karl asked me to provide after I had lodged my complaint:

Could you please supply details for the following:
• Period of ownership;
• Complete service history on the vehicle (for the life if the vehicle and prior to the incident), in particular if there have been any brake/wheel repairs on the vehicle and location of any servicing;
• Are there any modifications to the vehicle, in particular the brakes;
• Location and condition of the road you were travelling on at the time of the incident;
• How was the vehicle loaded at time of the incident;
• Any written communications between you and BMW Australia about your motorcycle;
• Has the issue been repaired and how was it repaired.

Because Davey likes photos, here is a picture of mine and the new replacement part (which is steel, not alloy). :P

:P :P I like the photos' Shane, excellent work, but I'm not liking the failure....

and I bet BMW continue to say "were not aware of any problem", (just like the GS/GSA centre stand bolts shearing, - and several club members have also experienced the same issue......and again...."whe are not aware of the problem"...

If you're unsure if your unit (or anything else) is cracked or not you're welcome to borrow my dye penetrant kit.

Simple to use and the indication is obvious.

The rear brake carrier problem also involves the R1200 RT.

If you have a 1200GS or 1200RT with cast wheels it can be inspected from the left hand side of the bike by putting it on the centre stand and rotating the rear wheel. The hub on the cast wheel is smaller than for the spoked wheels and does not obscure the extremities of the rear brake caliper.

My 2006 1200RT was recently serviced and Thorsten advises that the rear brake carrier had been replaced at some time with the strengthened steel version.
