Ewan, don't forget my bet??Ewen it comes back to the DR everytime.
$7990 ride away.
Uprate front and rear shocks, bung a Safari tank on it and away you go for 10G's
You should try Robbo's (if he'll let you ride it??)

Dont forget:
- the plank (err, seat)
- pannier racks (a good set ~$600; the rest ~$350)
- bash plate (~$200)
- exhaust ($???)... that is, if you like to hear the thumper note
- replace stock bars (~$150)... will bend on the first lay down
- proper set of handguards
Add a decent set of tyres for your first adv ride and you'll be closer to $12k lighter... plus lot more if you do things like handlebar risers, lower footpegs (all to get the ergo's right if you're over 6'), steering damper, pivot pegz, etc etc
Whilst not the good deal mine was
(merry xmas Robbo), instead of buying new, I'd be winging it to SA asap for this one. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost ... tcount=139

that is a pretty good buy, spend a K on the suspension and it's ready for the OCR. ( or a trip to Freo for coffee )

Re: xChallenge 650 - anyone have one?
Sort of on topic, I'm considerably less than 6' and I find the stock DR foot peg position too far forward and too high. So we've designed a couple of pairs of DR footrest hangers that move the pegs back either 75 or 50mm (not adjustable, either, or) and down 25mm from the stock position, these use all existing stock hardware._Wilks wrote:plus lot more if you do things like handlebar risers, lower footpegs (all to get the ergo's right if you're over 6'), steering damper, pivot pegz, etc etc
The 75mm brackets put the foot pegs pretty much aligned with the swinging arm pivot. The theory is that this will give a better balanced and more comfortable riding position when standing than the stock ergonomics offer.
We were hoping to make these from Aluminium but the stress analysis showed that the material isn't strong enough so they will be machined from alloy steel.
Once we've done some trials with the prototypes I'll post the outcomes. If anyone thinks they would be a benefit on their DR, let me know (no commitment!). No price yet but probably in the order of $50.00 - $75.00 per pair (cheap!).
Some people are like Slinkys, you can't help smiling when you push them downstairs.

Sounds like a fair price Chris, have you seen the offering from Vince Strang Motorcycles?
$45 for lowering plates for the stock pegs

Re: xChallenge 650 - anyone have one?
I'm happy with the PEG setup that came with the bike. I'm really enjoying the DR and would recommend it as a throw around alternative to my GSA when I want to do a bit of technical, chance of dropping and damaging the bike and short trip dirt riding usage. I still enjoy the GSA for longer trips and rides that I feel comfortable with Doris sitting on the back ( I think of extra luggage)
. Ewen I would also recommend the DR along with Robbo does , as an additional bike to your GS BIKE. I reckon you need more than 1 bike to satisfy all riding situations.
Keep in mind the x challenge is a BMW and as with all BMWs can be expensive if dropped and damaged. Suzuki DRs are cheap and easy to fix.

The DR is fine if you have all week to do a day trip - what you need is a HP2 Enduro

If you can find one for a half reasonable amount, unfortunately they are still fetching ransom money, so if you want to be serious and ride it hard you are throwing good money down the shitter when you bin it ( not if ), throw a DR down and you would stand there laughing, 2 DR's for the price of one old HP2.
