R1200GS Fuel Pump Flange Crack

Post by _Wilks »

Read this - http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=711467

This mob have fabricated a repair kit - http://www.beemerboneyard.com/rk12fuelpmpclmp.html. Shipping is a whopping $US45ea but a group buy of 10 units (for example) is only $US53.

Reply in this thread by 28 February to register your interest in buying the BBY kit.

If there is enough interest, I'm happy to organise a group buy.

Over to you guys.

Wish i knew about this 6 months ago... i smelt fuel after filling up and noticed a weep under the tank. Got Thorsten to fix the problem and it did not involve the $400 fix by replacing the whole pump (which i believe is the dealers 'fix' for the problem). I did see something on AdvRider about a possible warranty fix but typically BMW are ducking for cover from what i can tell.

Yeah, I've been procrastinating about this for a year or so but even if my HP2 hasn't developed any cracks yet, after reading the consistent flow of "me too" comments on advrider and ukgser, I now figure it'll only be a matter of time.

At less approx $45 via a group buy of 10, its a bit of a no-brainer to do some preventative repair imho.

On the Beemer Bone yard info section it also notes K1200/1300 as being a concern also.
When looking at the pic's on ADV rider It looks the same flange as the K1200/1300
You can put me down for one of the clamps please.
I have changed the quick disconnect awhile ago with Omega engineering brass ones after a fuel leak going to the border run.

More details on the issue in a recall release issued to the USA NHTSA on the recall.
Of particular note on page 3, item 6, dot point 5 which details corrective actions.
The corrective actions are indicative of the problem despite what BMW say as over torqueing a tapered NTP pipe thread will lead to splitting and cracking in any NTP fitting even in steel, however it is easily done in plastic.
The addition of the steel support ring will allow a bigger margin in torque settings and give additional support to the plastic collar.
Of the knowledgeable ones in the club maybe this recall report should be forwarded to our national regulator who controls recalls.

51,000 bikes recalled in the USA, model list is included in the recall notice, covers a large range of R and K models including the new 1600!!!

May be we should be asking for a retro fit of the steel reinforcing ring as a recall in Australia.

Agree with you Anthony.

I understand it has taken very sustained campaign over a few years by owners to get NHTSA to act... all within the very strong consumer/safety regime in the USA. The pessimist side of me says forget about waiting for intervention by the authorities, spend the $50 and be done with it.

My rear wheel rotor flange failure is still 'under consideration' by our national mob; 10 months after reporting it to them. Sheesh.

Only just saw this thread today. I have been aware of the flange cracking issue for some years now and monitored the 2005 R12GS I had and also the current HP2e. My 2012 R12GS is produced from the factory with the 'USA BMW Recall Ring fix' which is how the flange is fixed under Recall as per Anthony's post above. The 'USA BMW Ring, do not appear to be sold as a separate part when looking at the Max BMW Fiche for the 2010-12 R12GS.

I noticed cracks on my HP2e fuel tank flange yesterday, and below is a link and also the actual post I placed on the HP2 Enduro Forum yesterday.

http://www.hp2enduro.com/hp2e_plugins/f ... ?3115.last

"Had the top plastic tank cover off the bike (HP2 enduro) today and noticed two small cracks in the pump housing flange where the female quick disconnect screws in. The cracks are not all the way through the flange - only on the outside at present. Purchased the Beemer Boneyard clamp and a SS female quick disconnect from a local supplier and conducted the repair. Will monitor and see if the cracks enlarge?"

The local supplier is Munich Motorcycles. Clamp, and female Stainless Steel quick disconnect (which is recommended to replace the plastic quick disconnect when installing the Beemer Boneyard Clamp) AUD92.90. Took me ~1.5 hours to repair, which includes waiting 30mins for thread sealant (supplied) on quick disconnect to go tacky.

Prior to contacting Munich to ask if they carried the clamp and quick disconnect, I went into Auto Classic Parts to see if the **'USA BMW Ring' was available as a separate part for us Aussies - and No it is not according to their parts listings.

Thanks for the info Noel.

Munich list the clamp at $95 and the replacement female QD part at $60. Did I understand your post correctly, that you got both parts for $93? Was that a special price for you or a club member price?

Hi Shane - my invoice says $92.90 - no special deals, club membership discounts etc that I was aware of?? The chap did ask if I had shopped with them previously; I said yes, although it was some years ago; he took my name and I was still in their database; he then produced the invoice and I paid??????

Sorry Anthony. No interest here so I guess we do individual orders. I don't have any cracks (yet) so I'll be leaving it for a while before ordering.. maybe till late 2014.

Cheers

For those interested, Anthony has dropped off his new clamp with us. We should be able to offer an improved product, considerably cheaper. We'll probably knock out 10 or so.

If you're interested, let me know.
