R120R Diff

Post by conrad »

I have just been told me differential requires replacing on a 2007 R1200R with 21,000km.

My initial reaction is that this seems to have gone very quickly, however BMW are coming to the party by supplying the replacement, I have to pay for the labour.

Any suggestions as to why it should have gone, and has anyone heard of them failing?

I have just had to replace the ABS servo, I am a little concerned that expensive and fundamental items appear to require replacing so soon.

Have you owned this bike from new?
Has it had the regular service intervals met?
Has it been used as a tug?
It's not usual for the diffs to fail and certainly not at such a low mileage. What is commendable is that BMW are going to provide you with a replacement f.o.c except for the labour on bike that is 7 years old and out of the normal warranty period.
With regular maintenance these bikes can do huge mileage without major failures. But given the numbers sold there will allways be some that fail and from my perspective that's where BMW can and do make a real difference in helping their customers out.
If you know and are confident of the history of the bike and this is the only trouble you've had then I think you be ok once the diff is replaced.

Oh by the way don't use Diggers R1200GSA as a normal bench mark, he seems to be a little hard on his bikes

A little hard on his bikes? Master of understatement! He uses his as the designers intended.

I believe Robins is over 350,000 Kim's and the only grumbling noise is from the rider.

I wonder if Honda, Yamaha, Triumph et al would have come to the party in similar circumstances? No, of course not. That's why I've stayed with the marque for the last thirty plus years.

Actually... whilst talking to Robin at Spadille's, he mentioned that he replaces the big wheel bearing in the final drive every 80k to 100k. So at 350k, he's replaced it about 3 times.

Mines got 115k and is VERY noisy between 60 kph and 100 kph. Exactly as Robin described it.
