Desert Raid 2015 - Rawlinna - Tuesday 5 May 2015
No excuses for not going to this one. All the prepping via snail trail rides in and around Perth will pay off for those interested; particularly for the GS owners . There should be a big turnout from this club.
A simple way to deal with the 750kms Kalg to Rawlinna and return is to do your own hidden fuel dump somewhere along the Trans Access Rd on the outbound leg.

Or buy the superb DR 650 with a huge fuel tank which I recon will almost get me there and back on one tank.
I'll be there, can't wait.
Robbo.

No quite Robbo. Best I could get without running dry was approx 650kms. But that was at 80-90kmh the whole time and riding like Miss Daisy was watching me.

Sounds good.
Hmmm, what bike will I take.
TW 200 or the f800 both of these have the fuel capacity
Oh well I have a short time to think about that.
Count me in, I'll be there.
Ahab

Most problems can be solved with a suitable application of throttle!

Did that this year in April
Just east of rawlinna starts the, gotta watch out for bulldust patches ,railway spikes ,flat tires, LARGE front wheel reshaping rocks in the scrub either side of the two wheel tracks all the good stuff.... There is phone coverage all the way along the railway line ... if you are in a 4x4 your best speed will be about 40kph the SHARP rocks will slice the tyres to shreds any faster west of Rawlinna is a doddle...looking forward to doing it again.

Rawlinna is a great choice, I recon the camp we had there was the best display of stars in the night sky ive seen.
Sunday was too hot for me, i gave it a miss.

Robbo - If I remember rightly, you only had a 5l jerry can of extra fuel for the Cocklebiddy to Kal part.
Was it enough or did you all have to pool your resources?

Who has the gpx file from Steves ride out that way a few years ago ?
Been looking at maps for a convoy of outfits, telegraph track then along the cliffs to Cocklebiddy, then up to Rawlinna from the south, maps reckon the last bit is a bit vague

Once you get on that track you cant get lost...it is a little confusing closer to Rawlinna because the track tends to go in the opposite direction but it will lead you to Rawlinna eventually. There are some basic signposts to point you in the right direction. I only had Hema maps to guide me plus a bit of research on Google (Ozy Explorer and the like)bully1 wrote: then up to Rawlinna from the south, maps reckon the last bit is a bit vague

Sorry Ian i've just seen this, reklaw wrote:Robbo - If I remember rightly, you only had a 5l jerry can of extra fuel for the Cocklebiddy to Kal part.

Yes i had 22lt in the main tank and 5 lt jerry can, I borrowed another 5lt which easily got me to Kal, with approx 2-3 lts to spare.
From Rawlinner to Kal, which i remember being a well maintained gravel road, We were keeping our speed down to around 90kmh to save fuel.
Looking forward to doing it again.
Robbo.
